CenterPoint Energy Rates Going Up Despite Houston Opposition

by Michelle on June 14, 2011

CenterPoint EnergyEven as legislation is being introduced to try to make it easier for Texas electricity companies to raise their rates CenterPoint Energy is raising theirs.  The rate increase was recently approved by the Public Utility Commission and rates are expected to rise as soon as July.

The rate increase proposal was opposed by the city of Houston but the opposition did not stop the rate increase from being approved.  In upwards of two-million energy consumers in the Houston area are powered by the lines and poles that are operated by CenterPoint Energy.

Customers of CenterPoint have the option to shop around for cheaper electricity at any time because the state of Texas is a deregulated utility state.  If you are a CenterPoint customer, or the customer of another power company raising its rates, it would be a good idea to compare electricity rates before the rate hike goes into effect so that you can seek out a lower rate.  Texas Electricity Comparison can make comparing easier than if you were to do it using a phone book or an internet search so that you can start saving before the CenterPoint rates increase.

  • In February of 2009 customers of CenterPoint began paying a surcharge of $3.24 a month in order to pay for smart grid technology.
  • The smart grid surcharge is now supposed to drop though and CenterPoint customers will then only be paying $3.05 extra each month for the technology.
  • The most recently approved rate hike is expected to be approximately $1.32 more per month on CenterPoint electricity bills.
  • The total amount of the CenterPoint Energy rate hike is going to be $14.7 million.

Although it is obvious that rate increases are necessary to update equipment and such, this is the second significant increase in only a few years for CenterPoint Energy customers.

This is why Texas energy consumers need to be aware of proposed increases, so that they can compare rates using the Texas Electricity Comparison compare tool to search for lower rates.
